Newmachar Utd v Lossiemouth United

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 3-1 Lossiemouth Utd

We went into today’s game missing Murray Dawson, Conor Watt & Calum Reid but welcomed back Jack Cowie, Tait Duthie, Stewart Gerrie, Connor Walton & Ryan Whelan.

We started on the front foot and took the game to the away side, putting them under pressure from the kick off.

Our pressure paid off when Liam Mewse drilled the ball low into the net from a corner.

We created a couple more chances without really troubling the away keeper, although Ryan Cormack could have doubled our lead but missed a header from close range after a great cross by Liam Mewse.

The away side then came more into the game and created their own couple of chances and Simon Mitchell was called into action and he plucked a curling shot out the air as it was heading towards the top corner.

The away side drew level about the half hour mark when Simon saved well and parried a shot from the edge of the box but the away forward was quickest to react and slid the ball into the net.

It was a game that was going end to end and played at a good pace but there was no more scoring although Lewis Robertson had a couple of shots saved by the keeper and a couple of headers from Steven Young and Liam Mewse that went over the bar.

HT 1-1

The second half continued in the same vain with both teams having a go at each and we thought we had went back in the lead after a Liam Mewse shot was ruled offside.

The keeper then made a couple of good saves from Stevo Young at the back post and Ryan Whelan.

We took the lead again after Josh Reynolds made a run into the right side of the box with the ball and was bundled over. Ryan Whelan stepped up and placed the ball past the away keeper even though he had guessed the right way.

Shortly afterwards Simon produced a great save from a long range effort heading straight into the top corner but he got his hands to it and pushed it over the bar.

Lossie were then reduced to 10 men after the away midfielder was shown a second yellow for a challenge in the middle of the park.

We were controlling the possession and limiting the away side to long range shots and creating a few chances with the best falling to Stewart Gerrie, a Kyle Munro free kick and a long range Lewis Robertson shot.

We weren’t to be kept out for long and made our man advantage count when Tait Duthie played a ball through for Liam Mewse. The keeper missed the ball as he closed him down and was left with an easy tap in to put us 3-1 up.

Liam had the chance to get his hat trick when he just headed wide from a cross from the right and that was the last of the action we gained another valuable 3 points against a much improved Lossie Utd team.

FT 3-1

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

After the cup game a few weeks ago we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We got a great start with Liam scoring from the corner in the first few minutes but we then missed a lot of chances to put the game to bed early and we end up going in 1 all at half time, but it was a good second half performance and at this stage it’s all about getting the points.

Newmachar Utd v Lossiemouth United

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 1-1 Lossiemouth Utd (Newmachar win 5-4 on penalties)

We made it through to the Quarter finals of the Elginshire Cup after a hard fought game against a much improved away side on penalties.

The first half was even with both teams having a right go at each other with some decent possession football being played by both sides. The away side played some good football through their midfield but did not create any real chances to trouble Simon Mitchell in our goal apart from the good save from a driven cross. We were more of a threat in the final third and created 3/4 good chances by the away keeper pulled off some good saves from Conor Watt, Calum Reid and Josh Reynolds but the best chance fell to Conor Watt when he was played in after Stevo Young had played a quick free kick over the defence. He managed to round the keeper but a heavy second touch took the ball away from goal and his effort from a very tight angle went right across the goal line and eventually cleared. The entertaining first half ended all square

HT 0-0

We came out for the second half with a renewed desire and quickly pinned the away side in their own half. We were keeping good possession and were creating a number of half chances as the final ball was just now finding its way to our strikers feet.

Liam Mewse had a spectacular overhead kick attempt saved well by the keeper and Connor Walton had played in a couple of delightful cross box balls that just needed a touch.

We did go ahead on the hour mark when a corner was drilled in by Lewis Robertson and Stewart Gerrie made a great run to the near post area and he directed his header into the far corner. Just reward for all our pressure, however no matter how much possession we had we just could not find a second to kill the game off and with about 5 minutes left their midfielder dribbled into the box and was clipped by one of our defenders and the referee awarded a penalty.

The away midfielder placed a shot past Simon Mitchell to draw the game level.

We still had another chance to win it when a 22 yard angled free kick from Kyle Munro hit the far post but was cleared. The game finished 1-1 and went straight to penalties.

We went first and Ryan Cormack had his effort saved. Lossie scored their first penalty. Kyle Munro then rattled his high into the net. Simon Mitchell then saved the next away penalty. From then Conor Watt, Lewis Robertson, Greg Wood, Stewart Gerrie and finally Calum Reid scored our penalties. Simon then almost got to the 3rd and 4th away penalties but on the 6th he pulled off a great save to put us through to the next round.

FT 1-1 (5-4 penalties)

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Walton, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Young, Reynolds, Munro, Reid, Mewse, Watt, Whelan

Subs – Duthie, Cormack, Gerrie, E Dryburgh, Dawson, Wood, Collins

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

We knew Lossie were much improved and weren’t taking them lightly. I felt we should’ve had the tie wrapped up as we missed 3 or 4 big chances and when the game is tight going into the last 10 Lossie were always going to have hope they could get something, which they did. Ultimately it’s about being in the next round and while not very convincing, we got there. Big Si has earned his crust today with the 2 saves and our penalties were fantastic too.
