Newmachar United v Deveronside

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 0-0 Deveronside

WE ARE PROMOTED TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE!

We managed to secure the point we required to secure promotion to the Premier League but it was another nervy night in a game that should have been a comfortable win but for missed chances, good saves from the away keeper and a few shots cleared off the line it meant we were glad when the final whistle blew for full time.

This is a fantastic achievement for the Club and we look forward to next season and the challenges that being Premier League brings with it.

FT 0-0

NUFC Team – Mitchell, B Dryburgh, Young, Robertson, Walton, Reynolds, Munro, Duthie, Wood, Mewse, Cowie

Subs – Collins, Whyte, Gerrie, Watt

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

We’re up! That’s all that mattered. Brilliant achievement for everyone at the club. Probably should’ve been done already. Taking it to the very last game wasn’t ideal, it’s been a nervy last few weeks. Glad we’ve done it ourselves and not had to wait on results from other clubs.

Newmachar United v Sunnybank

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 2-0 Sunnybank

We welcomed Ryan Whelan, Sol Collins & Liam Mewse back to the squad with Murray Dawson dropping out with work.

What a big performance tonight with everyone playing their part in getting us back on track with a solid hard fought 3 points against the league leaders.

After two defeats in a week on our travels it was important we got back to winning ways at home.

The first 20 minutes was all blood and thunder with not much football being played and very little clear cut chances created by two teams who both knew the importance of the game.

But it was who broke the deadlock and got our noses in front when a break down the left saw Conor Watts efforts stopped by the away defenders arm in the box. Ryan Whelan stepped up and placed the penalty past the away keeper to put us in front.

We gradually took hold of the game and went further ahead when a ball was played over the top Ryan Cormack raced onto it and with two defenders breathing down his neck and the away keeper advancing he coolly lobbed the ball over the keeper from 20 yards to put us two up not long before the half time whistle.

HT 2-0

We knew the away side would look to come out of the blocks at the start of the second half but we coped very well and Simon Mitchell wasn’t really bothered apart from a driven shot he saved comfortably.

We started to play some good football and created a number of chances throughout the half with Conor Watt having a shot tipped over the bar, Ryan Cormack just missing a ball at the far post, Caly Reid putting the ball wide when one on one with the keeper and Liam Mewse got into a couple of good positions but tried to square it when he might have been better shooting.

Although we had the chances we restricted the away side to long range efforts and as the half went on the away side became more frustrated and their discipline started to erode with several bookings and then a red card for dissent in the final 10 minutes which made their job harder to come back.

We managed the game well and held onto our lead to take a very valuable 3 points.

To rub salt into the away sides wounds another player was sent off after the final whistle for something he said to the referee.

FT 2-0

NUFC Team – Mitchell, B Dryburgh, Young, Robertson, Walton, Reynolds, Reid, Watt, Whelan, Mewse, Cormack

Subs – Munro, E Dryburgh, Cowie, Duthie, Collins, Baxter, Whyte

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

Great to see us back. Great performance from the lads. Obviously they were very disappointed with the past 2 games and were keen to put that right. They’ve done it and being a bit more clinical could’ve had a couple more. I thought we were defensively solid and especially second half, caused them a lot of issues going forward as they pushed to try and get back in the game. Hopefully that momentum now carries into the remaining games and gets us over the line starting with what will be another very tough game against Glentanar

Forres Thistle v Newmachar United

Match Reports 22/23

Forres Thistle 2-1 Newmachar Utd

We travelled up to Forres hoping to put Tuesday’s result behind us but we fell short despite enough big chances to win the game.

We started the game slowly and were punished as the home side scored two headed goals in the opening 20 minutes leaving us a mountain to climb.

The home side were the better team in the first half and deserved their lead at the break although we did have a great chance when Calum Reid hit the crossbar from a far post diving header but apart from that we created very little to trouble the home defence. A penalty shout was waved away as Conor Watt was take down on the by line after he’d crossed.

HT 2-0

We came out in the second half with a change of attitude and pinned the home side back and eventually got a goal when Ryan Cormack beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and placed the ball past the defender on the line.

He then hit the post and the home keeper had a great close range save from Stevo Young.

As we were looking for the equaliser we were prone to the counter attack and the home side did create a few chances but Simon Mitchell dealt with them easily. We just ran out of time but credit to the home side who defended stubbornly and they held out for a 2-1 win which takes them within a point of us but we have a game in hand.

FT 2-1

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Dawson, Young, Robertson, Walton, Gerrie, Munro, Reid, Watt, Whelan, Wood

Subs – B Dryburgh, E Dryburgh, Cowie, Duthie, Reynolds, Baxter

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

Nearly. A much better performance in the second half. We have to start better and defend crosses into the box. We’ve been so good defensively for so long, the past two games are hard to explain but hopefully we can continue the way we finished the game into another tough game on Tuesday.

Buchanhaven Hearts v Newmachar United

Match Reports 22/23

Buchanhaven Hearts 3-0 Newmachar Utd

We travelled up to Peterhead with a full squad but our 9 game winning run came to a shuddering end after a poor performance allowed the home side a comfortable win in the promotion race.

A driving run from the skipper saw him play a pass into Whelan who, off balance, pulled his shot wide. That was about all we managed in the game and gifted Hearts 3 goals with our sloppy play.

At half time it was only 1-0 and we hoped we could raise it in the second half but it wasn’t to be.

We move onto the next game away to Forres on Saturday.

NUFC Team – Mitchell, E Dryburgh, Young, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Gerrie, Munro, Reid, Watt, Mewse, Whelan

Subs – Wood, Dawson, Baxter, Cowie, Cormack, Mewse, Reynolds

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

For as good as we’ve been the past 10 games or so, we were awful tonight. It’s unusual to see the whole squad miles off it. We never got the ball into Wheels feet or managed to get the wide men into it. Credit to Hearties, they were clinical when the chances arose and probably should’ve had a few more if it wasn’t for big Si in the sticks. Disappointing night and hopefully just a blip we can put behind us and move on to Saturday.

Newmachar United v New Elgin

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 4-0 New Elgin

We secured another 3 points with a comfortable win over New Elgin to keep our promotion hopes alive.

An early Ryan Cormack goal put us ahead but we struggled to get another goal until midway through when Murray Dawson rose high in the box and bulleted a header past the goalkeeper from a Lewis Robertson corner.

We created a couple of other chances but the away keeper had a couple of good saves to keep it at 2 as we tried to keep playing football on a fiery surface.

HT 2-0

The second half followed the same pattern with us trying to play possession football and we stretched our lead when a Lewis Robertson free kick was swung to the far post and Murray Dawson met the cross but his powerful header was brilliantly saved by the away keeper but Ryan Cormack was first to react and he headed in the rebound from close range.

Ryan Cormack then shortly after completed his hat trick when he controlled the ball first time and fired a shot past the keeper to make it 4-0.

We created another number of chances but Sol Collins, Kyle Munro and Greg Wood missed them and the away keeper made a couple of good saves from Liam Mewse.

The game ended with us claiming the 3 points and now looking forward to Tuesday nights game away at fellow promotion hopefuls Buchanhaven Hearts.

FT 4-0

Subs – Watt, Young, Walton, Gerrie, Munro, Baxter, Mewse

Good team performance. Great to see Ryan getting a hat-trick. Probably should’ve added a couple more but a clean sheet and 3 points taking us into a tough game on Tuesday

Newmachar United v Rothie Rovers

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 1-0 Rothie Rovers

We welcomed Rothie Rovers to Charlie’s for Tuesday’s championship fixture with Tait Duthie & Jack Cowie missing. Ryan Cormack, Ryan Whelan, James Baxter & Murray Dawson all returned to the squad.

We continued our promotion push with a narrow victory. It wasn’t a game for the purists on a fiery pitch with very little football played but we put in a mature performance and a Stewart Gerrie header from a Lewis Robertson corner just before half time was the difference between the teams.

The team defended as a unit throughout the game limiting the away side to very little chances. Simon saved well from a Jake Stewart shot, other than that there weren’t too many chances for either team.

We did have the ball in the net toward the end of the game. Greg Wood lifting it over the on rushing keeper and in off the post but the referee blew for a foul in the build up.

At this stage of the season the most important thing is to get the 3 points and this was definitely one of those games where playing passing possession football was sacrificed for the win.

Thanks to Ryan from North East Windows & Doors Ltd for sponsoring the game last night. Your support is really much appreciated.

We now move onto another home game v New Elgin on Saturday where another 3 points are vital in the promotion race.

FT 1-0

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Walton, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Young, Gerrie, Munro, Reid, Mewse, Watt, Whelan

Subs – Cormack, E Dryburgh, Collins, Wood, Baxter, Dawson, Reynolds

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

We knew what to expect. Rothie are good side, playing with a tempo hard to deal with and some very good, dangerous players in their side, so that coupled with a dry, fiery surface made it very hard to play any football. I knew if we could stay compact at the back and not commit men forward, we’d get a chance. This team always creates chances, we just had to be clinical. Lewis has put a great ball in from the corner and Gezza got his head on it.

We were almost in a couple of times but the final ball let us down. We restricted Rothie to very few chances so all in all, although a horrific game of football to watch, a very pleasing night.
I thought the team were fantastic. Some very good performances. We now have a different test in New Elgin to overcome on Saturday.

Glentanar v Newmachar United

Match Reports 22/23

Glentanar 1-4 Newmachar Utd

We travelled to Woodside for our first midweek fixture of the year expecting a tough game and it didn’t disappoint. We stood up to the test and secured another valuable 3 points on a difficult pitch to keep our promotion push on course.
We didn’t have it all our own way though with the home side going ahead on 20 minutes when a mistake at the back let the home forward run into the box and place a shot past Simon Mitchell.
We responded well and eventually squared the game after a driven ball into the box by Lewis Robertson was tapped in by Stevo Young.
HT 1-1
The start of the second half was a bit of a battle with limited football being played on a pitch that made it very hard to play passing football. We started to take control of the game on 70 minutes when Stevo Young cushioned a Conor Watt cross and sub Greg Wood smashed a shot into the net.
Greg was enjoying himself against his former team and shortly after he outmuscled the home defender just inside the home half and played in Liam Mewse who ran into the box and beat the onrushing keeper to put us 3 up.
We extended our lead when the home side were pushing forward and in a 3 v 1 break away Conor Watt had a shot saved by the home keeper with the rebound falling at the feet of Liam Mewse who tapped in to make the score 4-1.
Another satisfying 3 points but our focus now moves onto Saturday where we play Deveronside in the Quarter Final of the Championship Elginshire Cup sponsored by Kings Coaches.

FT 1-4

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Walton, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Young, Gerrie, Munro, Duthie, Mewse, Cormack, Whelan

Subs – Watt, Baxter, Reid, E Dryburgh, Whyte, Wood, Cowie

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

It’s another great 3 points. Woodside is a tricky place to go. They make it difficult for you and we got off to the worst possible start but i knew if we could get ahead they’d open up a bit and that’s where the third and fourth goals came from. Greg came on and his size and strength gave us something going forward we were missing. Their Centre backs couldn’t deal with him and he’s been right at the heart of the second and third goals.

Newmachar Utd v Lossiemouth United

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 3-1 Lossiemouth Utd

We went into today’s game missing Murray Dawson, Conor Watt & Calum Reid but welcomed back Jack Cowie, Tait Duthie, Stewart Gerrie, Connor Walton & Ryan Whelan.

We started on the front foot and took the game to the away side, putting them under pressure from the kick off.

Our pressure paid off when Liam Mewse drilled the ball low into the net from a corner.

We created a couple more chances without really troubling the away keeper, although Ryan Cormack could have doubled our lead but missed a header from close range after a great cross by Liam Mewse.

The away side then came more into the game and created their own couple of chances and Simon Mitchell was called into action and he plucked a curling shot out the air as it was heading towards the top corner.

The away side drew level about the half hour mark when Simon saved well and parried a shot from the edge of the box but the away forward was quickest to react and slid the ball into the net.

It was a game that was going end to end and played at a good pace but there was no more scoring although Lewis Robertson had a couple of shots saved by the keeper and a couple of headers from Steven Young and Liam Mewse that went over the bar.

HT 1-1

The second half continued in the same vain with both teams having a go at each and we thought we had went back in the lead after a Liam Mewse shot was ruled offside.

The keeper then made a couple of good saves from Stevo Young at the back post and Ryan Whelan.

We took the lead again after Josh Reynolds made a run into the right side of the box with the ball and was bundled over. Ryan Whelan stepped up and placed the ball past the away keeper even though he had guessed the right way.

Shortly afterwards Simon produced a great save from a long range effort heading straight into the top corner but he got his hands to it and pushed it over the bar.

Lossie were then reduced to 10 men after the away midfielder was shown a second yellow for a challenge in the middle of the park.

We were controlling the possession and limiting the away side to long range shots and creating a few chances with the best falling to Stewart Gerrie, a Kyle Munro free kick and a long range Lewis Robertson shot.

We weren’t to be kept out for long and made our man advantage count when Tait Duthie played a ball through for Liam Mewse. The keeper missed the ball as he closed him down and was left with an easy tap in to put us 3-1 up.

Liam had the chance to get his hat trick when he just headed wide from a cross from the right and that was the last of the action we gained another valuable 3 points against a much improved Lossie Utd team.

FT 3-1

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Walton, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Young, Reynolds, Munro, Collins, Mewse, Cormack, Whelan

Subs – Duthie, Baxter, Gerrie, E Dryburgh, Whyte, Wood, Cowie

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

After the cup game a few weeks ago we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We got a great start with Liam scoring from the corner in the first few minutes but we then missed a lot of chances to put the game to bed early and we end up going in 1 all at half time, but it was a good second half performance and at this stage it’s all about getting the points.

Islavale v Newmachar Utd

Match Reports 22/23

Islavale 3-4 Newmachar Utd

We travelled up to Keith with Drew McDermid, Conor Watt, Ryan Whelan, Tait Duthie, Stewart Gerrie, Connor Walton, Jack Cowie & Murray Dawson all missing through work, weddings & holidays.

We dominated the first half and should have been ahead in the first 10 minutes after a couple of good moves gave firstly Greg Wood the chance but his shot was blocked by the home defender, Liam Mewse then had a chance but the keeper saved at his near post. Calum Reid then shot past the post from close range.

We were playing some good possession football but we’re then hit by a sucker punch when the home side went ahead against the run of play when they broke down their left and when the ball was squared the unmarked midfielder placed his shot into the top corner.

We responded and again put the home side under pressure but the ball would not break for our players but just before half time we got level when Lewis Robertson fired in a cross which was cushioned by Ryan Cormack in the box and he turned the defender and fired in a left shot into the net.

HT 1-1

We came out for the second half in the same vain and went ahead after a good move down the right ended with Josh Reynolds putting in a great cross which was met by Greg Wood who headed against the bar and Ryan Cormack was quickest to react and he tapped in his and our second of the game.

We were still controlling the possession but with about 25 minutes to go we let the home side score with their second chance of the game after a free kick was swung in and the home midfielder got to the ball before Simon Mitchell and his flicked header found its way into the far corner.

The home side then create a couple more half chances but then we went back ahead with 4 minutes left when Kyle Munro, scored his first goal for the Club when he struck a 25 yard low curling free kick into the corner of the net.

We should’ve managed the game better but we let the home side equalise again this time from a corner which was swung into the box and another flicked header ended in the net.

The drama was not finished yet. With 92 minutes on the clock Lewis Robertson fired in a low free kick from the right which was flicked in by Calum Reid who had made a great run to the front post area.

We held out this time to deservedly come back down the road with the 3 points although we should’ve not had to leave it so late but great character shown by the squad to battle their way to the win.

As well as the 3 points it was great to see our team captain Euan Dryburgh return to action after a lengthy injury lay-off after breaking his leg in the first preseason game.

FT 3-4

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Young, Reynolds, Munro, Reid, Mewse, Wood, Cormack, Collins

Subs – E Dryburgh, Whyte, Morrison, Baxter

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

What a game for the neutral. Obviously today was about getting the points with the squad depth being stretched to it’s limits. I thought we played some good stuff, created some good chances and scored 4 good goals. Disappointing to concede the 3 we did but great character to win the game with about 2 minutes to go.

Some great individual performances with Caly Reid covering every inch of the pitch. Young Sol was fantastic and great for Ryan to get 2 goals under his belt. As good as the 3 points, seeing the skipper back on the pitch for a half hour was pleasing. He’s deserved it with the year he’s had. First his shoulder then the leg break. Hopefully that’s him back and nothing else hampers him.

Newmachar Utd v Lossiemouth United

Match Reports 22/23

Newmachar Utd 1-1 Lossiemouth Utd (Newmachar win 5-4 on penalties)

We made it through to the Quarter finals of the Elginshire Cup after a hard fought game against a much improved away side on penalties.

The first half was even with both teams having a right go at each other with some decent possession football being played by both sides. The away side played some good football through their midfield but did not create any real chances to trouble Simon Mitchell in our goal apart from the good save from a driven cross. We were more of a threat in the final third and created 3/4 good chances by the away keeper pulled off some good saves from Conor Watt, Calum Reid and Josh Reynolds but the best chance fell to Conor Watt when he was played in after Stevo Young had played a quick free kick over the defence. He managed to round the keeper but a heavy second touch took the ball away from goal and his effort from a very tight angle went right across the goal line and eventually cleared. The entertaining first half ended all square

HT 0-0

We came out for the second half with a renewed desire and quickly pinned the away side in their own half. We were keeping good possession and were creating a number of half chances as the final ball was just now finding its way to our strikers feet.

Liam Mewse had a spectacular overhead kick attempt saved well by the keeper and Connor Walton had played in a couple of delightful cross box balls that just needed a touch.

We did go ahead on the hour mark when a corner was drilled in by Lewis Robertson and Stewart Gerrie made a great run to the near post area and he directed his header into the far corner. Just reward for all our pressure, however no matter how much possession we had we just could not find a second to kill the game off and with about 5 minutes left their midfielder dribbled into the box and was clipped by one of our defenders and the referee awarded a penalty.

The away midfielder placed a shot past Simon Mitchell to draw the game level.

We still had another chance to win it when a 22 yard angled free kick from Kyle Munro hit the far post but was cleared. The game finished 1-1 and went straight to penalties.

We went first and Ryan Cormack had his effort saved. Lossie scored their first penalty. Kyle Munro then rattled his high into the net. Simon Mitchell then saved the next away penalty. From then Conor Watt, Lewis Robertson, Greg Wood, Stewart Gerrie and finally Calum Reid scored our penalties. Simon then almost got to the 3rd and 4th away penalties but on the 6th he pulled off a great save to put us through to the next round.

FT 1-1 (5-4 penalties)

NUFC Team – Mitchell, Walton, Robertson, B Dryburgh, Young, Reynolds, Munro, Reid, Mewse, Watt, Whelan

Subs – Duthie, Cormack, Gerrie, E Dryburgh, Dawson, Wood, Collins

We caught up with the gaffer after the game to get his thoughts…

We knew Lossie were much improved and weren’t taking them lightly. I felt we should’ve had the tie wrapped up as we missed 3 or 4 big chances and when the game is tight going into the last 10 Lossie were always going to have hope they could get something, which they did. Ultimately it’s about being in the next round and while not very convincing, we got there. Big Si has earned his crust today with the 2 saves and our penalties were fantastic too.
